7:44 pm - Jackdaws

Jackdaws are a common European bird related to the crow and is sometimes represented in Celtic traditions. One Irish tale recounts how the jackdaws tried to enter a town in Kerry, Ireland, but were refused permission by a king, on the advice of a druid. However, the king relented when the jackdaws found missing magical rings that protected all of Munster against a Fomorian attack.

1:36 pm - Infected computer
My computer is infected with a virus. I accidentally clicked on  a spam link et voila! Infested. If I don't respond to your emails today, that is the reason.

A few life observations:

We watched the Darjeeling Limited last night. I think Wes Anderson seemed a lot less pretentious in the late 90s than he does now.

The new Urban Outfitters fall actalogue revealed  a conspicuous lack of male models in tight skinny jeans. Rather they arewearing loose-fitting, comfortable jeans. Could this signal the end of androgynous male pantswear? Do I dare believe it?! The streets of Williamsburg will soon reveal the truth to me.

I thought I had one other thing to say, but I can't remember.

11:08 am - A Winsome Portrait
A few weeks ago I started up a little side-business of custom children's illustration named A Winsome Portrait. Here is the description taken from my Etsy shop:

These aren't your regular children's portraits!

Chantal Bennett, an illustrator based out of Brooklyn, NY who studies at Parsons The New School for Design, gives you the chance to place your child at the center of a story. Tailored to your personal specifications, she will complete an entirely custom illustration featuring your child as the main character. Choose from three different categories; animals, toys or flower fairies...or make your own category up!

So far I've gotten a bit of press from the major shopping blog Mighty Junior. Click to see the article here. Mighty Junior is a shopping blog dedicated to kids' stuff. It's a sister site to Mighty Goods, which was selected as one of Time Magazine's 50 Cool Sites of the Year. They were also chosen Best Shopping Site by both Forbes Magazine and Business Week. That's pretty cool!

10:13 am - Commissioned lantern

Here is a recently finished commisioned painting. It was huge (36x48) and it was acrylic. Those are two things that don't usually fall under my criteria, but I finished it and the end result is quite nice. The client really loved it. The inspiration for the painting was the colonial lanterns I kept seeing in Virginia. The client wanted really vibrant colours and basically something that would stop people in their tracks when they stepped into her living room. This is what I came up with:

7:52 pm

I forgot to post another of my final projects. We had to design a book and I decided to design a children's book about tea from around the world named Around the World in TwenTea Days. Joel wrote the text and it's nothing short of brilliant, and then I jazzed up the book with diecuts and popouts and such. The book isn't available online but here is a summary of the illustrations:

Also, a sketch of Mount Vernon from the road trip I took in May.

These are on the site web.

11:05 am - Coney Island

Joel and I went to the Mermaid parade yesterday on Coney Island. The place was PACKED with crazy people in crazy costumes. The weather was amazing too. We rode the Wonder Wheel and then found an excellent place to do some sketching. If you ever go to Coney Island for sketching, sit on the pier facing out towards the beach; it's the best place. And don't forget your sunscreen!

You'd think we were in Cancun or something!

10:38 am

Here is another final project from school. The scene is contained within a box that is 4 inches deep, but the idea was to give the illusion of depth. The box was a pain to make (too much math for Joel and I), but I had way too much fun drawing all the characters!

Below is my very first silkscreen! I really liked how it turned out. The incredible thing about going to art school in NYC are the amazing teachers you have to teach you; like my silkscreen teacher is a master printer who worked with Warhol.

Now I'm really excited to start doing it on fabric like I've always wanted to do.

By the way, I have an edition of 10 of these posters, so if you like it I'll sell you one for $45 + shipping. Drop me an email at info@chantalbennett.com

9:28 pm - Nice Neighbour NYC
Here's another design project we did in class; we had to design a campaign to raise awareness about a topic of our choice and make one item to use to market that campaign. I named my campaign Nice Neighbour NYC and the idea was to educate apartment-dwellers (so basically everyone in this city) on how to be nice neighbours (because BY GOD SOME PEOPLE NEED TO BE TAUGHT). I made a cute little accordion fold book:

Read the manifesto here:

I think my biggest pet peeve in this city is people and their frickin' dogs that bark at all hours of the night.

1:07 pm - Bond No9

I've wanted to post about the Bond No9 project for awhile now, but couldn't because we didn't know how it would turn out and who would win the competition. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like anyone won since the client couldn't make up her mind. Boo.

Anyway, a bit of background: Bond No9 is a really high end perfume company based in Soho. The owner came to our class and assigned us the project of designing a new bottle for her Astor Place fragrance. I used Brooke Astor as my main influence. This was a tough (but interesting) project because the client was not an especially illustration-minded person. So the challenge was to design a cool-looking unisex bottle without the illustration. Hm.

The first round of sketches were hand-drawn:

I had trouble with the unisex criteria since those who know my art know that it leans heavily on the feminine side. But I digress.

The second round were digital images with descriptions:

Personally, I thought the chain-link around the bottle was a genius idea, but that's just me! At this point the client was being very indecisive but seemed to like the middle bottle the most. Noël, my teacher, thought it best to use the middle one but ditch the choker chains and go minimal with it. Also, the client was quite attached to her opaque bottles, so the final result was this:

Am I happy with this? I suppose it could be worse. Being the least minimalistic person I know, I much prefer my previous more detailed ideas. But the client has to come first.

6:56 pm - Roadtrip sketches & Stevie
I've just returned from an extended vacation/roadtrip with my father, which took us down to Virginia and back up through New England and then ended up back home in Ontario. Needless to say, I am well relaxed.

Here are a few sketches from the trip

Also, here is a 3D portrait of Stevie Nicks from a few weeks ago. Most of the kids in class didn't even know who she was! To which I say: what IS this younger generation coming to? ;)

5:00 pm - The Wyeths

My dad and I just came back from a two-week roadtrip which took us first to Washington D.C, down to Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Mass., New Hampshire and Vermont.

While in Pennsylvania we went to the Brandywine River Museum. Unfortunately I only got to see half of the Wyeth and Pyle paintings because of a damned antiques show, but I still nearly lost my mind looking at N.C Wyeth's paintings. They literally stop you in your tracks. I've barely visited any museums that have galleries full of large-scale illustrations and now I know I've been missing out!! N.C's stuff looked amazing!! My dad bought a poster of this one below.

I want to work in oils now to be just like N.C...well, not really but I still love it.

They had quite a bit of newer Andrew Wyeth works in the galleries, which were cool but mostly very loose, washy landscapes. I still love them as far as lanscapes go, but I prefer his 50s-60s paintings. His brushwork is INSANE!! He paints EVERY SINGLE HAIR on a dog and EVERY SINGLE BLADE OF GRASS! Crazy stuff. This was one of my favourites in the gallery:

There were more, but I can't find them on the internet. I was disapointed that The Witching Hour wasn't in the museum.

I don't know if I'm getting across how AWESOME the Wyeths are. I love them.
The Howard Pyle paintings and drawings were awesome too. The museum shop sucked though. Their selection of postcards was limited.

I want more illustration in art museums and galleries. I often become bored in museums because a lot of art doesn't jump out at me and it's rare that I go "HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING!!!". The Wyeths had me doing it though.

1:19 pm - Castles & Turtles

Finally more than one image update at a time! The first is a
painting based on the creature Afanc; a celtic creature that came to
be thought of as a giant beaver and caused the flooding of a village

Next, a lovely château.

These two were used as a promotional piece, and I believe a
story might be developing around these two images.

Exciting news! I was featured today on the Endicott Studios blog: Endicott Redux!!!

I have been such a fan of this blog and of Terri Windling in general, and have been reading her Folkroots articles since the age of twelve! I'm so honoured to be on this blog, you have no idea. I recommend it to everyone interested in myth and folklore.

Thanks Terri and Midori!

10:03 am - Touch of Evil & NY Times
Only two more days of school left! When I think about where I was at this time last year, I tell you...I feel pretty good about myself. In any case, I'll be posting a backlog of work from this semester that I haven't had time to put on the blog or website.

First up, some design. This is a poster for the 1958 film Touch of Evil (starring the late Orson Welles and Charlton Heston) that we had to design for typography class. The criteria was that the poster should convey a crime story vibe and not a horror story vibe.

Digital, done in InDesign.

This next assignment was to redesign a page of the New York Times. We were given only the text of the articles and had to go about finding our own photos and making them work. I thought this was a fun assignment even though I'm not sure I would like to do this as a job. There was some grumbling from the class over this assignment and apparently some people have never read a newspaper, but I liked it.

Done in InDesign as well.

8:34 pm - Shoes.
I was bored in typography class the other day so I drew shoes in my sketchbook. One thing I've really noticed since moving to the city is the incredibly variety of shoes that people wear! This must come from staring at people's feet on the subway so often. Joel says he's never seen such a variety of Jordans in his life, and I've never seen such a variety of beautiful equestrian boots (damn you rich people).

Also, as a side-note, I hate it when people constantly pepper their conversation with movie quotes. I never remember quotes and I just find it incredibly irritating when I'm expected to answer a riddle every thirty seconds. This was the one of the causes of my boredom in typography class, which led to the shoe drawings.

5:56 pm - Etching and Colouring Books.
I'm taking illustrative printmaking this semester and so far it's been really interesting. We first tried lithography, which was interesting but too labour intensive for my liking. My lithograph did not turn out that well so I chose not to scan it. Then we went on to etching and I REALLY liked etching. I feel that it's much more conducive to the type of work that I do than lithography. Here are my etching prints:

The illustration print was done on a traditional zinc plate and drawn with an etching needle. The type print was digitally converted to film and burnt onto a polymer plate. Then both were printed on Rives heavyweight paper. And although I'm happy with both images, I chose not to put them on the website due to perspective issues in the illustration.

Also, here a few line drawings I did for a colouring book. The themes were Celebrities, Breakfast and Candy. For celebrities I wanted to illustrate a few pre-teen hearthrobs I had crushes on. See if you can recognize them

These are on the site web

7:31 pm - Geomancer
I updated the website a few days ago and forgot to "announce" it everywhere else. Here's a new painting:

I feel as though I haven't done any lifedrawing since last semester, and well...I suppose that's true. But it feels nice to get some decent sketches done. Here are a few recent ones:
Gouache, ink and pencil

11:48 am - Frontier House
I'm enabling comments on this post specifically in case someone randomly comes across my blog and can answer my question:

HOW DO I GET ON THE NEXT PBS REALITY "HOUSE" SHOW?! (whatever it is)

I'm obsessed with the "house" shows: first it was Regency House Party, then Manor House and now we're watching Frontier House.  I'm literally ACHING to be on Frontier House.  I just went through half an hour of internet searches to try to find what the next show is going to be and how I could apply but I can't find anything.  I don't even care what the time period is; I just want to go back in time.

So, does anyone have any information on this?

11:42 am - Failinis.
The invicible young hound Failinis "shines like the sun on a summer day and before whom every wild beast falls to earth powerless" is the subject of this new painting.
